Outa-Space is a FunkR&B instrumental recorded by Billy Preston that originally appeared on his 1971 A&M Records-debut album, I Wrote a Simple Song. Outa Space - Billy Preston. Billy Preston sometimes referred to Do What You Want is the eleventh studio album by American soul musician Billy Preston, released in 1976 on A&M Records. It includes the singles I've Got the Spirit and Girl, both of which were top 50 hits on Billboard's Soul Singles chart in the US. Preston recorded the album in Malibu, California in March 1976, shortly before joining the Rolling Stones on their two-month European tour. Preston made Outa-Space by using a clavinet, which is a type of electro-mechanical keyboard instrument, and a wah-wah pedal. He then improvised a groove with his backing band before subsequently adding organ and hand claps. The song was called Outa-Space because Preston thought it had a spacey sound to it.
