Mysterious Wrench
Austere, epic power metal from Brazil.

Released in 2002, PERFECT CREATION was the debut full-length album by Brazil’s Dracma, a six-piece power metal act from São Paulo. As of this writing, their only other release was a three-song self-titled EP in 2000.

The heavy guitars are upfront and not drowned out by the prominent cinematic keys. They’re pretty original featuring elements of bands like Manowar, Amorphis, Power Symphony, KD, Memento Mori, Rivera Bomma, Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, but without the slit-your-wrists melancholy of the latter. Don’t expect lame D&D lyrics; these boys have more weighty, spiritual things on their minds.

One of my favorite tracks is the instrumental “The Fall,” which is reminiscent of some symphonic piece, but I can’t recall which one. Other notables include: “Waiting,” which is heavy, driving and passionate with a doomy third act; the hefty “Mountain” with its ardent singing and a couple eccentric parts; the Manowar-ish, Amorphis-like “Riders,” which features a standout beginning; the Southern country-ish “Suffering Violence,” which starts with a slide guitar; the cool ballad “Clouds in the Desert,” which begins with desert wind-effects; the doomy “Perfect Creation,” which comes off as a cross of Memento Mori and Death Angel; and the closer “Suor de Sangue,” which is sung in Portuguese and has elements of Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride.

Too bad they didn’t release more material; they coulda been a contenda.
