Info

Caustic Grip is the fifth full-length studio album by Front Line Assembly, originally released on Third Mind Records in Europe and on WaxTrax Records in the United States in 1990. The album was the first without co-founding member Michael Balch after Rhys Fulber became a full-time member of the band. Originally intended to record the successor to Gashed Senses & Crossfire together with Leeb, Balch took on tour obligations for Ministry and Revolting Cocks. Leeb decided not to wait and started working. Front Line Assembly. WMG Warner Chappell, LatinAutor - UMPG, CMRRA, UMPG Publishing, LatinAutor, BMI - Broadcast Music Inc. Front Line Assembly displayed an efficiency befitting of their music's machine-like nature when co-founder Michael Balch stepped aside in 1990 and part-time member Rhys Fulber seamlessly took his place beside Bill Leeb beginning with 1990's Caustic Grip album. Fulber's timing was also propitious in the sense that the previous year's Gashed Senses & Crossfire had exposed FLA to a larger audience and set the stage for their newly minted production team to operate its magic with utmost precision and multi-layered attention to detail on the eminent follow-up. Caustic Grip creates the perfect vision of a cold, dark industrial reality. The album builds a brilliant momentum through songs that favour a razor-sharp mechanical beat structure interspersed with staccato basssynth lines and strings occasionally layered on top of that. It's quite a dark and aggressive album also, vocals are more in the agitatedaggressive spectrum than any of their other works and it all comes together so perfectly in mixing dark atmosphere with a highly technical stucture. I can't think of anything that comes close to this one in terms of capturing those same elements.

In my opinion, this is FLA's first solid release (comparing the user ratings will corroborate this). With Caustic Grip, Fulber and Leeb found their stride and their sound, and this record gave everyone a nice sneak preview of the long, prolific career the band would have in front of them. All the releases before this one were a bit too old school sounding (i.e. cheesy) for my tastes. Because the available equipment was becoming more advanced around this time, everything that preceded CG was limited in the musical level it could achieve. For reference sake, FLA's pre-CG material reminded me of Suicide Commando's demos, or very early Leaether Strip - both of which were also limited in the same sense. On CG, the sound quality was greatly improved over anything that came before it, as were the lyrics and the music itself. This record paved the way for the timeless classic Tactical Neural Implant, and even though TNI completely blew CG out of the water, the success of the former owes a lot to the formula that FLA uncovered on Caustic Grip.

Actually I would say this is their magnum opus as every FLA album that came before it was a build up to what they achieved here and TNI, although also excellent is somewhat of a derailment from their original path and lends too heavily to techno/dance stylings.
