Info

Madame Bovary ˈboʊvəri French: , originally published as Madame Bovary: Provincial Manners French: Madame Bovary: Mœurs de province , is the debut novel of French writer Gustave Flaubert, published in 1856. The eponymous character lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Flaubert sought more a new aesthetic form than a genuine narrative he wanted his book to be a manifest of realism, a new literary trend he is usually recognised as the father of. However, as many exemples prove it, Madame Bovary isnt a true piece of realism, since the narrator isnt an objective one and very often intervenes undirectly, changing the focus or using particular words to give his own vision of the reality. Although Madame Bovary is the central character, and an intriguing one at that, I don't believe that she is any more than a vehicle for Flaubert to vent his virtiole against men. There are four principle male characters in this novel and we see them reflected and caricatured in their responses to mixed-up, not altogether lovable Emma. Madame Bovary de Gustave Flaubert.
