With an organ tone thats not as grainy as that of many other Hammond players, Taylors musical blend tends to be sprightly and liquefied, as opposed to earthy and dense. Thats not to say he doesnt dig emphatically into classic funk-jazz territory, which he does ably on scorching tracks like Boot Up, Easy Time with terrific guitar work by Nigel Price, Dead Leg, and SpecialPlusExtra, as well as more laid-back groo. British soul-jazz organist James Taylor has crossed easily between stylistic definitions throughout his career, from the hard-charging garage rock of the Prisoners to his pioneering acid jazz work of the '90s.
