More than 20 years later, Taylor sounds rejuvenated alongside his new 4th Dimension band, offering a dozen original compositions that manage to find some of the old spark. With an organ tone thats not as grainy as that of many other Hammond players, Taylors musical blend tends to be sprightly and liquefied, as opposed to earthy and dense. Thats not to say he doesnt dig emphatically into classic funk-jazz territory, which he does ably on scorching tracks like Boot Up, Easy Time with terrific guitar work by Nigel Price, Dead Leg, and SpecialPlusExtra, as well as more laid-back groo. British soul-jazz organist James Taylor has crossed easily between stylistic definitions throughout his career, from the hard-charging garage rock of the Prisoners to his pioneering acid jazz work of the '90s. As the title suggests, Picking Up Where We Left Off finds Taylor returning to a straight soul-jazz setup with a classic Hammond quartet lineup akin to the James Taylor Quartet but featuring new collaborators in guitarist Nigel Price, bassist Andy McKinney, and drummer Neil Robinson.
