Tongues captures the third studio meeting between veteran percussionist Steve Reid and Kieran Hebden - the questing London laptop artist perhaps better known by his recording alias, Four Tet. At first glance, its a pretty unconventional pairing for Reid, whos primarily an ensemble player he made his recording debut hitting the skins on Martha and the Vandellas Motown classic 'Dancing In The Streets', and hes since played with figures including Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, and Sun Ra. Inspired by Sun Ra and Alice Coltrane, Four Tets 2005 album Everything Ecstatic was a startlingly organic-sounding simulation of psychedelia and free jazz. If you've seen Kieran Hebden live as Four Tet then you might expect the improvised 'Tongues' to be a mixture of rough, inventive beats and electro glitches. Hebden responds with a 44 pulse, but then frustratingly stalls beyond a light sprinkle of Tron-like computer effects and blips. The opener 'The Sun Never Sets' is also symptomatic. It concludes with out-of-control tape reels and a volcano of noises but you can't help but think it's because Hebden doesn't know what else to do. The impression one is left with is that the pair don't 'get' each other enough to produce something really startling
