Copland became part of the jazz scene in Philadelphia in the early 1960s as a saxophonist, and later moved to New York City, where he experimented with electric alto saxophone. The album featured almost all Copland originals. Three years later, Swiss producer Werner Uehlinger followed. In Poetic Motion, references to Bill Zavatsky's poem of the same title are everywhere. 2004 What It Says with Gary Peacock Sketch. 2004 BothAnd with Randy Brecker Nagel-Heyer. 2004 Brand New with John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler Challenge. What It Says represents some of Copland's most impressionistically abstract work and, for Peacock, his most successful duet outing this side of his work with Ralph Towner. The pairing of Peacock and Copland is not exactly new Peacock played on Copland's 1998 Savoy date, Softly , albeit in more traditional trio, quartet and quintet settings. By paring things down to the barest essentials, they have created a recording of quiet beauty dark and mysterious, this is chamber jazz at its best. Most telling are the two separate versions of Peacock's piece Vignette. This 58-minute CD was recorded from 2005-2007 Peacock was in his early seventies, and Copland was in his late fifties. Instead, Insight sounds like the work of two musical friends getting together in the studio and having a mutually agreeable post-bop dialogue. Double Bass Gary Peacock Piano Marc Copland. Peacock's crisply decisive phrasing, rounded yet penetrative sound and rhythmic leadership are very well captured. The music rarely breaks out of a mood of patiently tranquil exploration suggestive of Paul Bley or Bill Evans, but Copland is a highly creative player with good ideas he prefers to reveal by stealth. Titles like Watching the Silence, Vignette, Colors of Hue and Requiem give you the idea, but the two often merge as
