Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, CC CQ OOnt August 15, 1925 December 23, 2007 was a Canadian jazz pianist, virtuoso and composer. He was called the Maharaja of the keyboard by Duke Ellington, but simply O. by his friends. He released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, and received numerous other awards and honours. He played Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, and occasionally at jazz festivals, such as Torontos 2001 JVC festival and various European festivals. Also in 2001, he toured Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco. A tribute concert held at Carnegie Hall on 8 June 2007, as part of the Fujitsu Jazz Festival, featured performances by Wynton Marsalis, Marian McPartland, Hank Jones and Clark Terry. Peterson was originally scheduled to appear but bowed out due to frail health. He died of kidney failure in his Mississauga home in December that year. Born with a naturally perfect pitch, he learned to play classical piano from his older sister Daisy, who also taught piano to Montreal pianist Oliver Jones. In May 1959, Oscar Peterson recorded the excellent album Sonny Stitt Sits In With The Oscar Peterson Trio.
