Beyond the Gates is the second album by death metal band Possessed. It took a different direction from their debut, Seven Churches. Compared to Seven Churches, Beyond the Gates has a more technical feeling and, due to poor production, a muddy sound. Reception was mixed, with some very disappointed by the album for the sound and production, while others were happy with the new direction of the band. Beyond The Gates - Possessed. Verily, in most every observer's eyes, Beyond the Gates represented an almost indefensible step backwards transforming a sound previously distinguished for its inexorable power into a ragged, decidedly weaker-kneed replacement. Perhaps the record's feeble production was to blame, although it's hard to lay the blame entirely on experienced producer Carl Canedy in light of his previous triumphs with Anthrax and Overkill. Beyond the Gates feels more like a thrash metal album than a death metal album, like Seven Churches did. The comparison between the two is unavoidable because they are the only two albums Possessed ever released and because Seven Churches was so influential. Still a very good album nonetheless. Released in late 1986, BEYOND THE GATES is a major step forward from Possessed's 1985 debut, SEVEN CHURCHES. The band is much more mature sounding. SEVEN CHURCHES was recorded while the band members were still in high school, and it shows. The songs flow much better on BEYOND THE GATES.
