Album 2004 8 Songs. Piano Concerto No. 1 In D Major, Op. 17: Andante - Allegro Assai. By Camille Saint-Saëns. 17: Andante Sostenuto Quasi Adagio. 17: Allegro Con Fuoco. Anna Malikova. Saint-Saëns: The Piano Concertos. Throughout his lifetime that spanned nearly nine decades, Camille Saint-Saëns turned to the piano concerto five times as a vehicle not only to demonstrate his own considerable prowess on the instrument, but also to advance the concerto form and elaborate on his ideal relationship between soloist and orchestra. Ranging from the first concerto - a model of youthful impetuousness and bravura - to the fifth concerto written nearly four decades later - an exploration of near-exoticism - Saint-Saëns frequently experimented with new formats that challenged the traditional three-movement concerto. The Piano Concerto No. 5 in F major, Op. 103, popularly known as The Egyptian, was Camille Saint-Saëns' last piano concerto. He wrote it in 1896, 20 years after his Fourth Piano Concerto, to play himself at his own Jubilee Concert on May 6 of that year. This concert celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his début at the Salle Pleyel in 1846. This concerto is nicknamed The Egyptian for two reasons. Firstly, Saint-Saëns composed it in the temple town of Luxor while on one of his frequent winter. TITLE added to MP3 cart. Camille Saint-Saëns: Piano Concertos Vol. Thomas Sanderling & WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln. October 1, 2004. The 5 Saint-Saens concerti are all superb works of distinctive character and MalikovaSanderling are excellent in each. The rather dark tone of the piano adds to the richness of the writing for the soloist and Malikova makes great use of the great musical opportunities that the music affords. There are 3 great sets of these works that I would not be without: CollardPrevin, RogeDutoit and this set. personally, I like Collard a bit better particularly in 3 and 4: Collard takes the central section of Number 4 slower than anyone and it is sublimely beautiful but that is just personal preferenc. 29, No. WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Thomas Sanderling 01-10-2010.
